Before using App Store

To use App Store, you need:

An Internet connection: You can use Ethernet or Wi-Fi to connect to the Internet.
An Apple ID: To make purchases, you need to sign in to App Store using an Apple ID.

If you already have an iTunes Store account, a MobileMe account, or another Apple account, you can use that Apple ID. If you don’t have an Apple ID, you can create one.

Although anybody who logs in to your Mac can browse available applications, only an administrator can purchase, download, and install applications.

Sign in and out

When you’re ready to buy an application, you need to sign in to App Store using an Apple ID.

If you already have an iTunes Store account, a MobileMe account, or another Apple account, you can use that Apple ID. If you don’t already have an Apple ID, you can create one in App Store.

To sign in if you have an Apple ID:

Choose Store > Sign In, or click Sign In in the Quick Links section.
Enter your Apple ID and password, and then click Sign In.

To sign in if you don’t have an Apple ID:

Choose Store > Create Account.
Choose Store > Sign In or click Sign In in the Quick Links section, and then click Create Apple ID.
Follow the onscreen instructions to create a new Apple ID.
Choose Store > Sign In or click Sign In in the Quick Links section.
Enter the new Apple ID and password, and then click Sign In.

To sign out:
When you are finished using App Store, you can sign out to prevent anyone who can access your computer from making purchases using your Apple ID.

Choose Store > Sign Out.
Choose Store > View Account, and then click Sign Out.

To determine the currently active Apple ID:

Choose Store > View My Account, or click Welcome in the Quick Links section.

VoiceOver: You can use VoiceOver, a screen reader included with Mac OS X.
Keyboard shortcuts: You can use the keyboard to perform many tasks.

Search and browse

If you want to explore the applications you can download, there are several ways to browse. But if you’re looking for a specific application or kind of application, use search to find it quickly.

To browse:
Click a button in the toolbar.

Featured: Browse new and noteworthy applications.
Top Charts: Browse the most popular applications.
Categories: Browse applications in specific categories, such as photography. (You can browse applications in a particular category by choosing an item from the All Categories pop-up menu in the Quick Links section.)
Purchases: Browse applications you’ve purchased.
Updates: Browse updates to applications you’ve installed on your Mac.

To search:

Type text in the search field at the top right of the App Store window, and then choose an item from the pop-up list or press Return to display results.

Learn about applications

App Store helps you learn about an application’s features and requirements, and shows you customer ratings and reviews.

App Store displays a special rating that helps you understand whether an application may be inappropriate for children of a certain age. For example, “Rated 17+” tells you that the application may not be suitable for children under the age of 17. You can use ratings to set up parental controls to limit the App Store applications your children can use.

Buy, download, and install applications

You use an Apple ID to purchase applications and download them to your Mac.

After downloading, applications are automatically installed in the Applications folder, and application icons appear in your Dock.

To buy, download, and install an application:

If you want to make a purchase using an iTunes gift card or other iTunes credit, click Redeem in the Quick Links section.
Find the application in App Store.
Click the application’s icon or name, and then click Buy (click Free for free applications).
If you’re not logged in to the computer as an administrator, enter an administrator’s name and password.
If you’re not signed in to App Store, enter your Apple ID and password, and then click Sign In.
If requested, click Billing Info to enter or verify your billing information.
Click Done to download and install the application.

After downloading begins, the application’s icon and a progress indicator appear in the Dock.

To pause, resume, or cancel an application download:

Control-click the application icon in the Dock, and then pause, resume, or cancel the download by choosing an item in the pop-up menu.
Click the Purchases button in the toolbar, find the application in the list, and then pause, resume, or cancel the download.

If a download is interrupted because you lose your Internet connection or quit App Store, App Store starts the download again when the Internet connection is restored or the next time you open App Store.

View and manage your purchases

You can display a list of applications purchased using App Store. The list tells you the date of an application’s purchase, and lets you manage an application’s download status.

To learn about applications purchased using App Store:

Click the Purchases button in the toolbar.

For any application in the list, you can:

Pause, resume, or cancel a download.
Download and install an update to an installed application.
Download and install an App Store application purchased on another Mac using the Apple ID currently signed in.

Use applications on multiple Mac

After you purchase an application, you can install it free of charge on every Mac you use.

Here are ways to install a purchased application on another Mac:

On the other Mac, find the application in App Store, click Buy or Free, and then provide the Apple ID you used to purchase the application.
Copy the application from one Mac to another Mac. When you open the copied application on the other Mac, enter the Apple ID used to purchase it.
Open App Store on the other Mac, and then log in using the Apple ID used to make the purchase.

Click Purchases in the toolbar to list applications purchased. Any application that has an INSTALL option was purchased using the Apple ID, but not installed on the Mac you’re using. You can download and install the application on the Mac.

Update applications

App Store keeps track of updates for the applications you’ve purchased. The Updates button in the toolbar shows the total number of application updates available for downloading.

The number of updates is also displayed on the App Store icon in the Dock.

To manage application updates:

Click Updates in the toolbar.

For updates in the list, you can:

Download and install all of the updates at once, or download and install a specific update.
Pause, resume, or cancel a download.

Provide feedback for an application

You can review any application you’ve downloaded. You can also post a concern about another person’s review.

To provide feedback for a downloaded application:

Click the application’s icon or name to display information about it.

Do any of the following:

Rate the application by clicking one of the stars next to “Rate this application.”
Submit a review of the application by clicking “Write a Review.”

To report a concern about an existing review:

Click “Report a Concern” next to the review you’re concerned about.

Review and change your Apple ID settings

You can review and change billing information, the password, and other settings associated with an Apple ID at any time.

To access your Apple ID settings:

Click Account in the Quick Links section.
Enter the Apple ID and password for the settings you want to work with.
Click View Account, and then use the links to review and edit your settings.

Use parental controls

Use the Parental Controls pane of system preferences to control access to App store or to installed App Store applications. This is helpful if you are a parent and you want to ensure that your children use only applications that are simple or appropriate to their age.

To limit a user’s access to App Store or to installed App Store applications, you must first turn on parental controls for the user’s account.

To turn on parental controls for a user:

If the user account already exists, choose Apple menu > System Preferences, click Parental Controls, click the lock if it’s not unlocked, and then enter an administrator’s name and password.

Select the account, and then click Enable Parental Controls.

If the user account needs to be created, choose Apple menu > System Preferences, click Accounts, click the lock if it’s not unlocked, and then enter an administrator name and password.

Click the Add button (+) below the list of users, choose “Managed with Parental Controls” from the New Account pop-up menu, enter name and password information, and then click Create Account.

To restrict the installed App Store applications a user can open:

Choose Apple menu > System Preferences, and then click Parental Controls.
Click the lock if it’s not unlocked, enter an administrator name and password, select an account in the list of accounts, and then click Apps.

Select Limit Applications, and then choose an option from the Allow App Store Apps pop-up menu:

Don’t allow: Choose this option to prevent opening of any applications purchased from the App Store.
Numerical ratings: Choose “up to 4+” or another numerical option to restrict application access based on App Store application ratings. For example, an application rated 4+ contains nonobjectionable material, but an application rated 9+ may not be suitable for children under the age of 9. If you choose “up to 9+,” the user can open applications rated 9+ and lower.

All: Choose this option to allow opening all applications purchased using App Store.

To control a user’s access to App Store:

Choose Apple menu > System Preferences, and then click Parental Controls.
Click the lock if it’s not unlocked, enter an administrator name and password, select an account in the list of accounts, and then click Apps.
Select Limit Applications.

In the Allowed Apps list, click the Other Apps arrow to display a list of applications, and then do one of the following:

Select App Store to let the user open App Store.
Deselect App Store to prevent the user from opening App Store.

If you’re having trouble using App Store, try these solutions:

If you see a message that your computer can’t connect to App Store, make sure your Internet connection is working. If you can open a web browser and view a website, there may be a problem with the store. Try using App Store again later.
Make sure your computer’s date, time, and time zone are set correctly in Date & Time preferences. Choose Apple menu > System Preferences, and then click Date & Time.
Make sure your Apple ID information is accurate and that you don’t need to correct a problem with a previous purchase. To verify your Apple ID information and review your purchase history, choose Store > View My Account or click Account in the Quick Links section.

Keep running processes to a minimum
Even with modern eight-core Macs with ample RAM, you may still get hiccups in performance when many tasks are open at once. To keep things running at top speed on any system (old or new) be sure to minimize the number of processes running at the same time. With regards to open applications, go through your open applications and quit the ones you are not using. For Windows switchers, most of the time just closing the active window is not enough to quit the application and you will need to use the Command-Q hot key, choose "Quit" from the respective application menu, or right-click the application in the Dock for the option to quit it there.

Sometimes it is not a matter of performance, but that other processes will be waiting for an unused system service to finish a task before they can continue running. This can be seen as a small hang or two with the spinning color wheel cursor, so be sure to quit unused applications and turn off unused system services/features if you do not need them. These may include menu add-ons, but also system services like file sharing. If you do not use file sharing on a daily or even weekly basis, then disable it while you are not using it. Go through the system preferences and disable other features you are not using.

Disable unused fonts
Many applications will load each font that is installed on the system, and if you use a variety of graphics tools you can sometimes have thousands of fonts. While having many fonts lets you \properly view document contents, many programs like Illustrator and other Adobe products may heavily interact with every installed font when loading and running, which can use more RAM as well as show small performance hits. Additionally, some system services like printing will also interact with fonts.

Fonts are automatically enabled when installed in OS X--when either manually installed or if they are included with a third-party program--so over time, the active font library can get quite large and cause the dependent applications to load and run slower.

If you have a number of fonts that are not needed, disable them using Font Book or another font managing application. The easiest way to do this is to spend time with Font Book and create collections of fonts that are used for different tasks. Font Book already has some libraries for Web, fixed-width, PDF, and various languages. Right-click these and choose "enable" or "disable" based on the task. One tip is to create a new library with all fonts in it and use that to disable everything else, and then use other libraries to just enable the subset of fonts you require for a specific purpose. For the most part, the default system fonts like Helvetica, Georgia, Geneva, Courier, and Times will all be enough to view most content.

Optimize your RAM
One major source of system slowdowns can come from running out of available RAM. When this happens, the system will use the very slow hard disk as a substitute for the fast system memory, and it will "page out" the RAM contents to the virtual memory space on the hard disk so the majority of the active processes are in RAM. If you have enough memory to run the active processes, then the paging process will only cause a small delay; however, if you do not have enough RAM, then the whole system can bog down while the computer tries to manage active processes using the hard disk. A hard drive's throughput is around 25MBps to 50MBps sustained transfer rates, and 100MB to 200MBps burst rates. In contrast, RAM's throughput is on the order of gigabytes per second (about 8GB per second peak transfer rate for the DDR2-1,066MHz memory used in modern Macs). Because of this difference, it is preferable to keep as many of your active system processes in RAM as possible.

Open Activity Monitor and list all items by "Real Memory" (or "RSIZE") to see which programs are using the most memory. Compare the current usage with the "System Memory" graph below the process list, and concentrate on the green wedge of the pie. If the available memory is low, then look through the list and quit programs that are using the most memory (these will be started by the current username). System processes will be started by "root" or a username that begins with an underscore. If any of these processes are taking up large amounts of memory, you can disable the corresponding feature in the OS X system preferences, or in rare cases you can quit them using Activity Monitor. For the most part the system's launchd process will relaunch any required processes that have been quit, but only do this if you know exactly what you are doing. A better alternative would be to just restart the computer.

Sometimes the "Kernel Task" process will take up a lot of memory, especially if you are running a MacBook system with integrated graphics. The integrated graphics will use the system memory, which will be reflected by an increased amount of memory in the Kernel Task process.

If you are regularly running low on memory and need to upgrade, while Modern Macs may accept random assortments of memory module sizes, for best performance be sure to installing matching modules that are sold and installed in pairs or triples (more applicable to MacBook, MacBook Pro, and Mac Pro machines).

Here are some resources for buying and installing RAM upgrades in Apple's machines:

Keep space free on your hard drive
If you have low hard drive space, the system may not have adequate virtual memory space available for paging out memory. Paging happens all the time to keep memory optimized for performance, and if the hard drive space is low then the efficiency of this process will be reduced. If you are also low on available RAM for your active processes, then your system may go so slow that it will seem to fully lock up. When it comes to hard drive space, the more the better, though our recommendation is to keep at least 10% free as a rule of thumb. This will help prevent drive fragmentation that can lead to degraded virtual memory performance.

Turn off energy saving features
Apple's systems come with a few energy saving features enabled, which help cut down the power consumption used by them, but they also can result in slowdowns and hiccups in performance. Go to the "Energy Saver" system preferences and, if available, enable faster CPU speeds and "better performance" for the GPU settings. If you have a newer MacBook Pro with dual graphics processors, your only option is to run on low performance, or have the system automatically detect the GPU. You might consider installing "gfxCardStatus," which lets you to select which GPU to use.
Lastly, turn off the option to spin down the hard drive, and you will not see the sometimes apparent pause while the system gets the drives up to speed. Keep in mind that spinning the drives down may increase the life of the drive, but it will also lead to small hiccups in performance while the system spins them back up.

Unmount unneeded volumes
If you have optical media in the DVD drive, remove it if you are not using it. Like hard drives, the system will spin down the optical drive to reduce noise and save power; however, unlike hard drives the optical drive can take a number of seconds longer to spin back up, which can result in applications and the system temporarily hanging. This can especially happen when you open or save documents in a program.
In addition to optical media, unmount unused network volumes. If the networked machine is unresponsive then the Finder and other applications may lag while the system tries to communicate with the networked machine. Generally a disconnect will fix the issue, but sometimes the hang will not allow you to do this.

General Maintenance
Lastly, if you are finding the system to be much slower than normal, you might try running a general maintenance routine on it to clear out caches and other temporary items, as well as check the software configuration for permissions errors and other problems that might be contributing to the slow down. We recently wrote a general maintenance procedure for OS X that should cover most of these temporary items and settings on the system, so run through those steps to hopefully speed things back up.

1. Pressing Esc while typing in most applications pops up a list of suggested completions of the word you’re typing. (Does anyone know if there’s a way to toggle the permanent display of this?)

2. Image Capture lets you manage photos on your camera before you download them.

3. Right click on an open PDF in Safari to get the a context menu which includes the option to open the PDF in Preview.

4. Pressing the Tab key in Exposé cycles through open applications.

5. Press the ` key in Exposé to cycle backwards as per the previous tip. ( ‘ is the key Tab and left of the 1 key).

6. Press Command-Q to close applications when command-tabbing. This is possibly the fastest way you’ll find to close several applications in quick succession.

7. Macs with remote controls can be put to sleep by holding down the play button on the remote.

8. Triple click selects a whole paragraph of text.

9. To select a block of text, click the start position, then Shift-click the end position. Significant;y, this doesn’t just work in editing applications like Word (where you might be already doing it anyway), but it also works with non-editable text, such as a webpage in Safari.

10. In TextEdit, Option-click & drag selects a rectangle of text. (When you need it, selecting a rectangle of text is really useful, so if anyone knows other applications that have this functionality, let us know.)

11. We all know Command-shift-4 to capture a selection of the screen, but don’t forget pressing the Spacebar will toggle between selection mode and select whole window mode.

12. Command-click the jelly bean found in the top right corner of some applications to cycle through toolbars.

13. In Safari, Command-Shift-click a link opens it in a new tab and immediately displays the page. (If anyone knows a way in Safari to force a page to open in the same window, do tell.)

14. Hold the Option key will clicking the Zoom button (green button, rightmost of three in the top left corner of windows) switches the zoom state of all windows in the selected application.

15. Option-click the minimize button minimizes all windows in the application - and makes for a really cool animation (hold the shift key too if you want to slow it down to see it more easily).

16. Option-click on a minimized window will restore all windows for that application.

17. Option-click on a running application in the Dock hides the front-most application and brings the clicked application to the front (unless it already was).

18. Option-click on the close tab icon in Safari, closes all other tabs. Handle this one with care - there’s no warning dialog.

19. Option-arrow moves cursor by word. One for the Windows switchers who are used to using ctrl-arrow.

20. When menus are selected, press the option key to reveal alternative functions. Eg In the File menu of Finder, the Get Info item becomes Show Inspector which is like a context sensitive info pane.
